Top 20 List: Which Countries Spend the Most?

In 2017, the number of people worldwide using e-commerce platforms to buy consumer goods (e.g. fashion, food, electronics, and toys) grew by 8 percent.  Approximately 1.8 billion people around the world are now buying online.  About 45 percent of all internet users use e-commerce sites, but usage varies considerably between countries.

Consumers in which countries are most likely to buy something?  Here are the top twenty:

2. South Korea

3. Germany

4. Sweden

5. USA

6. Taiwan

7. Netherlands

8. Japan

9. UAE

10. Thailand

11. France

12. New Zealand

13. Ireland

14. Australia

15. Malaysia

16. Spain

20. Canada

The amount each person spends on e-commerce is also growing, with average revenues per user (ARPU) up by 7 percent year-on-year to reach US$833.

The British are the biggest e-commerce spenders, with annual spend in the UK now greater than US$2,000 per user.

The figures above are for consumer goods.  If spending on other categories such as travel, digital content, and mobile apps were added total global e-commerce value is closer to US$2 trillion.
