| By TMA World

How will you engage and retain Millennial employees?

About 42% of the U.S. workforce in 2018 will be made up of Millennials.

According to a recent survey of 1,500 Millennials – conducted by the software firm Qualtrics and venture capital firm, Accel Partners – the number one factor Millennials think about when starting a new job is (drumroll): “Sufficient Training”.

The top five things millennials want when they start a new job are:

1. I’m sufficiently trained – 40%

2. Expectations and goals are clearly set – 31%

3. I’m provided all the information needed to do my job – 30%

4. I’m given reasonable goals and timelines – 26%

5. Leaders seem invested in my success – 23%

Training that offers a blended approach where Millennials can access online content and offline coaching is ideal.

Here are some other interesting observations from this and similar studies:

  • 72% of Millennials who are likely to leave an organization in two years are dissatisfied with how their leadership skills are being developed.
  • 69% aspire to be leaders in the next five years.
  • 60% want training to develop their leadership skills.
  • 80% said an emphasis on personal growth is the most important quality of a company’s culture.
  • 67% said they would be willing to take a pay cut to work at a company that offers good mentorship opportunities.

What do Millennials see as the most important qualities of a manager?

1. Trustworthy – 81%

2. Respects work/life balance – 80%

3. Clearly communicates expectations – 74%

4. Available and responsive – 64%
