Global Leadership self-study module

Successful performers in domestic roles frequently do not translate their leadership success into the international arena. A far more complex range of personal, interpersonal and environmental factors comes into play that can hinder, confuse or frustrate the unprepared, ultimately leading to low performance.

The Global Leadership self-study module is an online resource that examines the challenges of leading in a global business environment, explains the personal capabilities required for being successful and outlines key strategies for excelling in a cross-border leadership role.

Who can benefit?

Managers whose role includes an international leadership element.

How does it help the user?

The Global Leadership self-study module enables users to:

  • Understand crucial elements that impact on the leader role in the international business environment, including volatility, uncertainty, complexity and ambiguity

  • Recognise, respect and work with the range of differences encountered in the global business world

How does it work?

Availability: the Global Leadership self-study module can be accessed on-demand 24/7 from any computer with an internet connection.

Interactivity: the module is split into four core sections. The first section explains the leader’s role in creating the future, and the requirement for greater context sensitivity in international as opposed to localized roles. The second explains the personal characteristics required of strong cross-border leaders and enables users to rate their own skills in each key competency area. The third provides productive strategies for overcoming leadership challenges of scope, difference and habit. Finally the fourth section is a quiz to test learning achieved and to consolidate key learning takeaways.

  • Environmental, Interpersonal and Personal Lenses framework: learners are provided with an intuitive framework to help them understand the key skills required of a global leader.
  • Scenario-based learning: questions and scenarios are presented to the learner during the module to test knowledge, attitudes and response. In this way, practical learning is achieved based on incidents and scenarios that reflect the real global workplace.
  • Interactive, user-friendly experience: the module incorporates voice commentary by a TMA World teamwork consultant, in addition to interactive functionality throughout the tool, to ensure learning is maximized through an engaging and enjoyable user experience.
  • Global Readiness e-Portfolio: this module forms part of a series of online learning resources called the Global Readiness e-Portfolio. Users can complete other modules in the series depending on their individual learning needs, and so build the broader skills to be successful on the global stage.
